We are a family of distance runners

Yesterday was a great day in the life of my family. All four of us ran the Terry Fox Run, my daughter who is nine ran all 10 km, as did I and my husband, and my son, 11, came in first in the 8km and 5km category, completing the 8km run in 30 minutes.

It was a great day. I was so pleased to finish “stong” with no pain and actually having enough juice to speed up for the last two kilometres. Years ago, I did a marathon, in 2002 when I was about 29 years old. In the years since then, I’ve had chronic back issues, never anything severe like a slipped disc but always nagging and being a reason why I couldn’t be as active as I wanted to be.

So to complete this 10 km run, not only for myself but with my children on the road with me, well it was a little overwhelming. I crossed the finish, blinking back the tears, realizing how far I had come and wanting to run again.

I’m a little sore today, and probably will be for a few days, but the memory of what we accomplished will be with me for a long time. I’m so proud of us all!
