Jack and the Beanstalk (2013)

The cast is pretty special with Stanley Tucci, Ewan McGregor and Nicolas Hoult, but this strange little fairy tale at times feels more like an episode of Lost than a story about a beanstalk.

There’s the damsel in distress, so like Evangeline Lilly, and Hoult very like Matthew Fox. This strange world of CGI sets and waterfalls, and pastry rolling giants feels a bit like the Dark Crystal which I have a pretty strong memory of seeing when I was about nine.

The giants take centre stage with all their monstrosities, and Jack bests them all. It’s medieval times, complete with armor, and helmets with plumage. This wants to be so many things but there’s nothing really to makes you want to cheer them on at all, except for McGregor’s hair cut. It really is the best one for years.
